The project began on the street. As part of an assignment exploring signage in everyday urban environments, the research involved observing shop fronts, traffic signs, and the cafés frequented on morning walks. It was in one such café that a letterboard became the focus of attention: a simple changeable-letter sign whose precision-molded alphabet raised a question — how do individual letters physically connect to the board, and could that attachment mechanism be incorporated into the design rather than hidden by it?

The answer became Neue Letterboard's first iteration: a monospaced typeface with pronounced horizontal strokes standing in for the pins, designed for the letterboards found in cafés, cinemas, and storefronts. Its wide, geometric forms drew on Eurostile, Microgramma, and Earth.

The project has since moved beyond that original constraint. Alongside the monospaced system, a proportional expansion is now in development. One that keeps the underlying character of Neue Letterboard. This cut leans further into geometric construction, inspired by Futura and Fundamental Grotesk: cleaner circular forms and a departure from the boxier and square-ish proportions of the letterboard original.

Additional weights and styles are planned as the family grows, moving Neue Letterboard from a single-purpose signage solution toward a more versatile type family.
